The court represents one of the oldest forms of private spaces in our cities and municipalities. An inner courtyard is a court enclosed from all sides, mostly in big, coherent complexes of buildings. There is a huge number of types and names, for example the "patio" in the Spanish and Italian architecture, an inner courtyard that could be open or covered with glass and serves as a source of light for the surrounding rooms.
Nowadays the name atrium is applied for many glazed inner courtyards. Originally the word atrium signified the inner courtyard of a roman dwelling house, later a courtyard which was set apart from the main building. Today the term is used in an inflationary way and has edged out the term inner courtyard.
From our point of view courts are one of the most neglected forms of free space in our cities.
Especially inside the wilhelminian quarters, mostly with a very high building density and a low amount of green area, the inner courtyards offer chances to reintroduce some green to the city in the future.
With our work we want to help that these chances are taken and can counteract the general trend to convert within the process of renovation our inner courtyards into monotonous parking areas.
